I'm sure someone has already asked this but I'm new to this website and I'm not sure where to go.
Yes I am 19 years old, no I do not have kids, but I have two very young brothers, one is 5 and the other just turned 2. My mother is bound to teach Catholicism to my young brothers. I am the only Atheist in my entire family on both my mother and my father's side of the family. I love my brothers as if they were my own kids and do not want to see them sucked into creationism. My 5 year old brother is so smart I can't even believe it sometimes, and I want him to learn evolution, I want him to know that we shouldn't believe in something without any proof because well... that's just being an idiot.
So how can I help my brother actually THINK and not go towards creationism?
Yes, thank you.
This might be a bit advanced for the 5 year old but he should be able to understand enough of it. This is a serious where Richard dawkins does what he does best, and that is teaching and explaining evolution
Oh good link thank you!
This is going to be balancing act for sure. I would be very careful that you do not end up getting yourself banned from seeing your brothers depending how extreme you think your family is. I would perhaps focus a little more on talking to them about this in a more serious way once they are slightly older and in school where you won't be the only forces of reason. I think they are far more likely to cut through the faith bs as they mature then ever before judging from trends among young people. I would perhaps talk about some basic themes that do not support the bible as they get a older etc but in a way that won't draw instant attention from your family. Heck you can use Santa as a great teaching tool for their critical thinking and reasoning skills which is why I'm pro-Santa. Santa is really not something that can co-exist with the Jesus of the bible if you follow the rules in the bible and is often one of the very first real lessons for a person showing that trusted family members can mislead you for years about something where you are told to have faith and are required to suspend belief for. Once they figure out in the next couple years that Santa isn't real (sadly) you can talk to them how it makes them feel and about the fact that people mislead them just don't be the one who ruins Santa for them though. You can also make sure to have them watch shows on Animal Planet/ Discovery Channel and promote things like Dinosaurs to them as another way to help provide more balance for them against the bible.
