How to argue against a particular delusion.
Hello everyone,
A friend of mine is a pretty die-hard Christian (shock horror, both of his parents are missionaries/vicars) and he often posts little sayings of some kind or another on Facebook, which I usually ignore. However, today he posted something that really irritated me for some reason:
"The more I look at science, the more in awe of God I become."
And just to make that worse, one of his Christian friends commented "Boom" as if he had made some kind of infallible argument. Somehow, I feel as though nothing I say will make any difference because they must be incredibly deluded already to believe that God just "invented" science. Basically, this is the guy who thinks he's a "modern and intelligent" Christian by saying that things like Noah's Ark are "just stories and aren't meant to be taken seriously by Christians". But if that is true, then why take ANY of the Bible seriously and where does he draw the line between stories and (what he believes is) the truth?
In the past I asked him and his friend where the evidence was. He claimed science (yes, seriously) helped prove Christianity and that Christianity was about "opening yourself" to it and believing, and then you "feel God" or whatever. How do you argue with someone like that??
What do you all say to religious people (not necessarily just Christians) who claim that science is just an invention of God? Is there a specific way to argue with someone who twists everything to awkwardly suit modern day thinking?

Whether that's true or not, they used Christian teachings as an excuse for their actions.

Is "no true Christian" anything like the "no true Scotsman" fallacy?
I suppose it wasn't "true Christians" who burned William Tyndale and John Hus at the stake for creating Bibles in a language other than Latin? Who do you suppose, in 1517, burned seven people at the stake for the crime of teaching their children to say the Lord’s Prayer in English rather than Latin?

Obviously not, come on your smarter than that! Christians strive to be Christ-like, and would never participate in such things. People often claim a moral authority to do evil things...they aren't Christians!

Agreed. How much mental torture would one go through while tied to a stake, watching someone light the brush under your feet, feeling your feet burn first... all while proclaiming your innocence of the witch they believe you to be?
Oh, that's right - they're 'not real Christians.' Please - that Christianity beget current Christianity.
Have you seen the video of Hitchens volunteering to be waterboarded? Pretty insightful. He knew he could stop it and it was still torture to him. Imagine not being able to stop it...

Alisha - William Tynedale published the first English-language Bible in the 1500's against Papal edict that forbid Bibles in any language but Latin - he was burned at the stake in 1337, after being hunted for years, but being the nice guys that they were, the Christians strangled him first!

Yea, good ol' Hitch only lasted about 3 second, but it was water after all, a substance Hitch wasn't used to. Now had they use Johnnie Walker Black he would have laid there for 20 minutes at least. :D

Richard, it took the Catholic Church 300 years and a few moon landings, to leap to the conclusion that Galileo was right about the earth orbiting the sun, rather than vice versa - wouldn't you call that being just a bit adverse?

Once again, category dumping. Your right, all us Christians are living in the mental stone age. WOW. Funny how no one can say how the universe leapt into existence, and how life began, but have no problem conclusively deciding that there is no God.

Ahh, no. Of all the explanations that have been offered and evaluated, the god story is weakly supported by the data presented in its defense. That's how these things work. You would be amazed at how easily our position would change when said data shows up.
