A few hours ago I went over to my uncles house and his mother-in-law was there making some tamales (we're Mexican). My other uncle was there and his 5 month old baby girl was there with him. I don't see my new baby cousin much so I thought I'd spend a few minutes playing with her. I played with her and before I left my uncle's mother-in-law, with a serious face, told me to draw a cross on my baby cousin's forehead with my own saliva because I could "harm" her and won't let her sleep. I kind of looked at the lady like, "I'm sorry did you just seriously say that to me?" I am not kidding, she was being completely serious. I just started slowly walking off and she stopped me and told me to do it. OF COURSE I refused and told her I don't believe in her stupid ideas and she just looked at me in disbelief. I have to deal with a super religious aunt who won't leave me alone and to this day I don't know how to tell her I'm an Atheist but now I also have to deal with this crazy lady?!
If you were me, what would have done? What would you have said to her? I'm still surprised she seriously sad that to me.
Thanks!

Bravo! +1

Permalink Reply by Milos Cakovan on November 19, 2012 at 12:01pm First things first... I love tamales (My wife is Mexican).
Second, did you ask her exactly how would you not drawing a spit-cross on her face harm her?
You did the right thing. Stand your ground, kiddo.
I can somewhat relate to that.
My mother in law is super religious, and one day, while my wife was making some broaches for my cousin's wedding, and I was reading a book on mythology, she asked me to read out loud so she isn't bored making these things in silence.
So I started reading, the first chapter was on the religion of ancient Egypt, and my mother in law (who doesn't speak a word of English) deduced that I am reading about the devil, and every time I would start reading out loud, she would come into the living room and start singing bible verses, trying to drown out my reading.
And the best part is, when I was done reading, and we went out, I left the book on the living room coffee table. When we came back home, I noticed my book covered with christian magazines, and the bible right on top!
When it comes to religious people, expect everything. No matter how batshit crazy it might sound.

I would give her a link to my deconversion thread here on TA; "How do I know that your god is The One, True God?" I say that sincerely. This is just my reaction, but in a nutshell, my reaction would be to deconvert her.

She probably thinks the internet is the devil's invention too.
Do not collect a sackful of frogs and dump it in her bedroom. That would be bad.

I'd say that if you want to take the time to tangle with her thought-garbage, then get her to explain in detail how it works, and have fun shredding her arguments.
If you don't want to waste your time, then do like you did and simply refuse to participate. Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle.

Permalink Reply by James Cox on November 20, 2012 at 2:27am As part of my ongoing philosophy training, I joined a pagan group early 90's for a few years. It was rather fun, but I was clearly out my depth in many ways.
During a group conflict, a fellow that had a leaning towards what appeared to be Satanism, confronted me about control of the group. He was attempting to pull the woman out of the larger group, to build his coven, where he was the symbolic representation of the male portion of the god head (I expect that he was 2 tacos short of a combination plate). For some reason he saw me as a threat, I think because I showed a mild sceticism, to contra balance what I saw as nuttyness. He told me that he could lay a curse on me to control my life if I got in his way! I told him that, I had no faith in his game playing, and called him pretentious! Nothing happen by the way, but the main group folded up a little latter.
During the mid-80's, I had been visiting some of the local churches, taken in dinners, services, and study groups. One afternoon, I was on my way to a job interview, and had a flat tire on my bike. As I was repairing the tire, a woman that I later recognized as a member of one of the churches, stopped and ask if I needed help. I told her my situation, and asked if she could, on her way to the town I was going, could stop and advise the office for the interview, that was going to be atleast 20 mins late. She said yes, I thanked her, gave her my name, and waved goodby! I finished the tire repair, and was only about 10 mins late to my interview. The interview seemed to go ok and I felt that I had atleast made a reasonable showing of ability. I spent the rest of the day care free and on a short bike trip, returning to my point of origin late that afternoon. At the time I was between jobs, so I was spending a few weeks with my parents. On my return, my parents showed real concerning for my welfare, asking me 'where have you been all day'. I said, 'job interview and bike trip'. Then the other shoe comes off, 'There was a weird woman that came by looking for you. She open our front door, ran in, and yelled at us, saying that YOU have stolen her soul, and that you are SATAN himself and that we are the Mother and Father of SATAN! Then she ran back to her car and spun gravel pulling out of our yard!' Floored, I spent a few years wondering what the hell happen that could set this woman off! Latter, reading a book concerning Ocult symbolism, I found a reference of the witch hand signs for setting curses! I think when I waved goodby to this poor woman, I had inadventently folded my fingers into my palm cheating a claw like shape. Then I waved it at her. I do wonder how this woman might know, unless she had been reading some of the same references. LOL
