I have been doin a lot of reading as one of the things christians love to say if you point to the violance in the OT is "well look at Hitler and Stalin they wer Atheists , How many people did they murder?"
I never knew what to say to this, now after doing some reading including the Mein Kampf, reading the Richskonkordat, the contract with the Catholic church that Hitler signed and looking at his history, Hitler was very religious.
Interesting links to look at, what do you think about Hitler and religion and that Christians say he was an Atheist?
I think Hitchens covered that one also here...
Thanks Reg. I was just so pissed at this being used as a tit for tat by the christians, God killed but what about your Atheist Hitler how many did he kill? Now I have something to answer with. Not only the link you gave but a lot of other information.
You don't know what to say?
How about "Hitler wasn't an atheist" ?
How about the fact that each SS soldier had the words "Gott Mit Uns" on their belt buckles, the German for "God With Us."
How about the fact that each solider was also required to take the Reichswehreid (Hitler Oath). The translated oath:
"I swear by God this sacred oath that to the Leader of the German empire and people, Adolf Hitler, supreme commander of the armed forces, I shall render unconditional obedience and that as a brave soldier I shall at all times be prepared to give my life for this oath."
How about the fact that, for some reason, Hitler's Mein Kampf never made it onto the Index Librorum Prohibitum, the Catholic Churche's list of banned books.
Is it perhaps because in that very book Hitler states that he believes by his hatred of Jews he was acting not only in accordance with the two Christian denominations, but God's will itself?
How about the fact that the Catholic Church actually has a treaty with Nazis, such as the Reichskonkordat, which guaranteed the Catholic Church full rights in Nazi Germany. Here are two of the articles (original German)
1- The German Reich guarantees freedom of profession and public practice of the Catholic religion.
It acknowledges the right of the Catholic Church, within the limit of those laws which are applicable to all, to manage and regulate her own affairs independently, and, within the framework of her own competence, to publish laws and ordinances binding on her members.
4 - In its relations and correspondence with the bishops, clergy and other members of the Catholic Church in Germany, the Holy See enjoys full freedom.
In short, Hitler was an atheist my ass.
Quotes from Mein Kampf. Just use a few and ask the Christian what the evil atheist Hitler meant when he wrote:
I had excellent opportunity to intoxicate myself with the solemn splendor of the brilliant church festivals.
And so I believe to-day that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator. In standing guard against the Jew I am defending the handiwork of the Lord.
In short, Hitler was an atheist my ass.
Shorten that again - Hitler was a Psychopath
Psychopaths will use anything to get what they want.
We do know that the Holocaust could never have happened without the blessings of the Catholic Church. Hitler knew that too and he manipulated them because he knew the Church would back him up.
He was a Psychopath - Full Stop - Thats it.
1. By all accounts Hitler was a Christian. He made a few comments about the church but he was clearly critical of the political institution rather than the Christianity being espoused. I'm pretty sure he once even claimed to have rid Germany of all atheists. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_views_of_Adolf_Hitler#Statem...
2. Whether or not Hitler was an atheist or Christian does not matter. He did what he did based on his ideology, not his religious beliefs. Sure, he attributed his ideology as "doing gods work" but so did many ideologues. Frankly, if you need to bring up Hitler to criticize religion, you're not doing it right. :P Every group has their fair share of assholes. Even if Stalin and Hitler were atheists, that would only be a coincidence. To suggest otherwise would be akin to suggesting moustachioed men are murderers. Having a silly moustache doesn't make a person a murderer any more than being atheist does.
3. Hitler didn't kill anybody. The people who actually did the killing were almost exclusively Christian. So it is completely ridiculous to blame atheism for murders committed by Nazis.
My point exactly. I find that every single time you talk about the amount of people killed in the OT and they know you are Atheist, they will tell you that Hitler was an Athiest and he killed so many inocent people. It is almost as if they have to push the "idea" that Atheists are evil people. Lets make Hitler an Atheist and then we can prove our point. I can now ask them on what they base the popular assumption that he was Atheist.
Hitler was a Catholic. His Mein Kampf is filled with biblical quotes. Christians just can't admit that one of the worst and most cruel dictator happened to be a Christian himself. That's why like to rationalize themselves and make believe that Hitler was an "Atheist"
That's another good point.
Rather than accept that Christians can do bad things, those who argue that Hitler was an atheist are using the No True Scotsman fallacy. "Yeah, maybe he said stuff about God, but no TRUE Christian would have done those things..." Ridiculous.
I doubt that Hitler was motivated substantially by any religious questions. However, he would have vehemently denied being an atheist and gladly embraced the religion in which he was raised: Catholicism. He professed belief in God often, notably in Mein Kampf and in numerous speeches. In March of 1933, one of the first actions Hitler took as the new chancellor was to outlaw atheism. That should settle the matter, but Bill O'Reilly will NEVER accept the idea that Hitler wasn't an atheist.
Hitler must be an atheist, because no good Christian would do those things. (Tomás de Torquemada)
