Harry Reid (D-Nevada), Senate Majority Leader, ranted last week on the fact that the U.S. Olympic Team uniforms were made in China, demanding that they be burned and be replaced with something "American." Now, I'm a lifelong Democrat, but this outburst made my skin crawl.
Now several things came to mind. First, I saw the manager of a local uniform shop interviewed, and she said virtually ALL uniforms are made outside the United States. Secondly, watching Sen. Reid speaking, I wondered what he'd look like if everything he was wearing that was made outside the U.S. suddenly vanished. Would that picture be suitable for family viewing?
But finally, as the Chinese pointed out in their response, The Olympics are a respite from politics. They invited hin, while burning the uniforms, to also burn anything else he owns that was made in China. While I think having China as a political ally is certainly a way off, it is better to have good relations with them than sour relations.
