Ok, so YOU are aware of it - that that is the source of the ideas you have about a powerful, invisible being running the show - yet you still see merit in that core idea about an obviously mythological being?
I'm still on the journey, Heather, so what my answer is today is different than it will be tomorrow, and what my answer was yesterday, is nothing like it is today.
I recognize that the church plays a very large role in defining God, indeed, it defined my worldview - my very life. But in coming to know what I know now, I am more inclined to hold the church suspect with regards to what much it says - particularly those within the fold of the fundamental/literalist sort. What I find merit in is in the teachings that Jesus reportedly said regarding living a life worth being lived. I don't expect you to believe any other way, than what you know your life to be. My theism today is defined less by what the church, or a book, tells me and more by what I think and how I act on a daily basis.
Does this answer the question, or miss the mark?
Ok, I think that fully answers my question. I believe that I was, at one time, almost exactly where you are now in terms of theistic standpoint. Thanks for your candor on the topic.
A 10 year old little girl was asked by another classmate, "What is it like to be a Christian?"
The girl replied, "It's like being a pumpkin. God picks you, takes you away from the other pumpkins, and brings you into his house, away from the sun, water, and nourishing soil that sustained you in nature. He takes a sharp knife, slices you open, and removes your entrails, focusing with great care to eradicate every last trace of your reproductive system. Then he carves a happy face into your living flesh. He puts you in the window with a candle inside you, so all the other pumpkins can see your fate. He leaves you there until you rot. After that, he throws you into the garbage."
The classmate replied, "You are one sick, twisted, little fuck. I sure am glad I'm an atheist."
God doesn't always carve such a happy face.....
