Great piece. I really suggest to anyone reading it to take a glance at the comments as well. There are some very interesting opinions being pointed out.
The government does not own a copy right on 'the truth' but it does have a responsibility to uphold scientific, evolving fact. Peer review, experimentation under a controlled setting and re-analyzation of the world we live in is the lowest common denominator for education. Anything extra a person would like to teach their child should be done in their own home and family setting, not on school (and taxpayer) time. When religion infiltrates a school system, it ALWAYS leaves the minority abused.

Good read, but it's from October 2007. I wonder how things have progressed since then.
I wish the United States was 1/2 as progressive thinking as Sweden. The greatest shame of human history is what the United States has done with its global preeminence since the end of the Cold War and the utter collapse of scientific education in the country since the 1980s (coinciding with the unfortunate rise of neo-con thought and religious fundie ascendancy).

To paraphrase Brando...."we coulda been somebody, we coulda been a contender...instead of a bum"...
Old news, but good news. I wonder how things turned out...
