I made a claim today that I should not have done without having specific examples in mind (and if this has been discussed before, please let me know).

My claim is that god is bipolar. Of course, there are other mental disorders we could label him with, but this is the one I want to explore.

It is evidenced initially by creation of the world.... he worked for 6 days with no sleep, and thought everything was good. (manic stage) and then he destroyed the world in a flood (depressed stage).  But what else is there?

I found this article later, and while it was amusing, its not quite the concrete, biblical evidence I want, though it does make reference to a few books.

Thank you for getting the conversation back on topic.  I will look at the link more later on.  I enjoyed the SAB site last night.

This was supposed to be a fun little conversation, and should have been a lot less heated.  We all KNOW there is no real god, christian or otherwise, but there are people out there that refute the fact.  I think rather than arguing over evolution and science til you are blue in the face, changing it up can be more useful.  Pointing out character flaws rather than fossil records allows for LESS argument, imo.

Bipolar is a possibility, but I prefer the narcissistic psychopath theory.  Especially since that is the type of person who would found a cult and inevitably design a "god" after his own inner self.

go for the easy ones, for instancce:

thou shall not kill- but honor killings, genocide, infantcide, human sacrefice, religiously motivated killings, and murder of homosexuals are not only allowed- they are an expected duty of the believer!

Supposing you are talking about the king james version:

Does god want us to be wise or not?

PRO 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

ECC 1:18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

1CO 1:19: "For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."

Does god only like the righteous sometimes?

PSA 92:12: "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree."

ISA 57:1: "The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart."

God had never been seen and he forbids ever being seen. O wait, he has been spotted.

EXO 24:9,10; AMO 9:1; GEN 26:2; and JOH 14:9: "And I will take away my hand, and thou shalt see my backparts." (EXO 33:23) "And the Lord spake to Moses face to face, as a man speaketh to his friend." (EXO 33:11) "For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved." -jacob (GEN 32:30)

God CANNOT be seen: "No man hath seen God at any time." (JOH 1:18) "And he said, Thou canst not see my face; for there shall no man see me and live." (EXO 33:20) "Whom no man hath seen nor can see." (1TIM 6:16)

Personally, I have never seen a more severe case of bipolar disorder. Here is some more:

The mean side: "I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy." (JER 13:14) "Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not, but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling."

The sweet side: "The Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy." (JAS 5:11) "For his mercy endureth forever." (1CH 16:34) "The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works." (PSA 145:9) "God is love." (1JO 4:16)

He also can't decide whether he wants to tempt anyone or not:

"And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham." (GEN 22:1)

"Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man." (JAS 1:13)

God can't even make up his mind about sin:

JO1 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. JO1 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. JO1 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

JO1 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God"

And he can't decide if you should answer fools:

PRO 26:4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

PRO 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

That is all I have for now. It is always best when you can use their bible against them. HAVE FUN :)

Thank you, Becky.  This was, arguably, the single most helpful reply.

No prob. I feel that I have been arguing with xians forever. I have tried every angle to have a civil, intellectual debate with them but I tend to always end up with the same result. It has been exhausting and I have ultimately given up. I am still open about being atheist, though. I will not hide it. They should be the ones that hide their idiotic claims. Their religion is embarrassing.  Anyway, They demand that you hear what they say but they don't give a damn what you have to say. They insist they are right and you are wrong.  It is hard to keep my cool sometimes. I wanna just beat some sense into them but, if I react in anger, they will think they have won.

I am still occasionally attacked on the subject. They are only looking to argue again but I have a completely different approach these days.  Although I now HATE religion, ESPECIALLY christianity, I try not to offend them. I wanna show that we are not "asshole atheists".  When dealing with theists, I try to remember to approach them as if they are children... children that know with all of their hearth that santa exists. Children think santa is their friend, and if you tell the children santa isnt real, they think you hate santa for some reason. Then it hurts their feelings that you dont like their friend. They know  he exists, he gives us presents.  Children aren't mentally capable of understanding. They can know what "exist" means, but they don't quite grasp the concept of it.

Same goes for theists. They aren't mentally capable of  understanding what you are saying. When you say god don't exist, they think you are defying him for other reasons. They still don't get it that you mean this literally. They can't even picture it. They know what the words mean, but they can't grasp the concept of questioning it. They know  he exists, he blesses us daily.  And since they know he exists, you know it too. So in their head, you just don't like their friend. It's pathetic really.

Another analogy: It would be the same as you telling me my toes don't exist. I know they are there and you know it, too. You are just trying to be a pain in the ass. Christians see god as an actual, physical thing and know he is there. Plain and simple. And atheists know it, too. They are just trying to be a pain in the ass.

If you have found some that actually listen to what you have to say, you are lucky. Respect them for it. But make sure you let them know how ridiculous they are, in a nice parent to child way :P
