After reading the responses to my "Atheism: Social Suicide" post, I was curious...

If someone were to host a social event or gathering close to (or in) your town, would you attend?

Would you ever consider hosting your own event for members of the TA community in your area?

yeah, I follow a couple atheist/skeptic local meetup groups here: http://www.meetup.com/

Yes, this.

Yes and Yes.

Hell yes!

I finished my profile for the local meetup here in Baton Rouge, today. I still have to pay dues, but yes when I am able to, I will attend meetings and discussions. I need to interact with people with whom I can discuss my/our views without feeling I have to defend my position. Here is a list of Atheist, Agnostic, Humanist, etc. meetups around the U.S.:

As far as hosting an event? Not in my present circumstances. Sometime in the future, absolutely.

Absolutely I would do both.

I sort of do already, a few of my friends are also TA members and it seems every time we get together the conversation turns to religion vs. science.

Maybe and probably not.

I'm not a hugely social kind of person, but it would be nice to meet people face to face.....just not in my house...

That depends. There are already a good deal of gatherings in my town that I never go to because they're... boring. I can sit and talk to other atheists at home, in my pajamas, and eat whatever I want. Why would I sacrifice that freedom to go to a stuffy restaurant and talk?

Now, if it was an event that involved something more than eating and talking, I'd go.

Oh, I suppose I could "host" something if I got desperate enough but it would be something along the lines of, "Meet at the front gates, 10a. Bring money. We're entering at 10:01."

I would

I would definitely attend and I would love to host my own event if I had the place for it. I have only been a member here for about five months and I have been active on the site for less than two and it is quickly becoming my second home. I would love to have the discussions we have on this site in person.

Absolutely.
