I'm not talking about marijuana, I am talking about the hard-core drugs like Meth, Crack, etc. I am against drug usage but I have a question. What do you all think that proper punishment should be for abusers and dealers? (EDIT: I am meaning the ones that commit crimes while on the drugs or the ones that commit crimes to get the drugs. And should the dealers be just as accountable because they provided them with the drug?)

I recently watched a documentary about meth, and the officials in Thailand have simply killed off many of the users.

I personally know quite a few meth addicts here in the U.S. that, after serving their sentence for being "busted", have returned to drug abuse. Obviously, rehab and prison isn't working.

According to the website ncvc.org, 81% of crimes are drug-related. What, in your opinion, is the best solution for punishment and what can our authority figures do to get things under control?

Not quite sure who wins the lobbying battle between police officers and prison wardens vs. pharma companies and experts.

Ever noticed how there seems to be a connection between religiosity and drug laws? I don't think they want us to feel good. :)

You are both right.  Drug laws are a "happy" confluence of monetary interests and twisted ideology.
Exactly.  The religious are pathologically anal retentive.  Pointless self-denial and suffering are what the Freudian father figure in their heads wants, so they obsess over giving it to him--even if they have to force the rest of us to go along.
Don't forget the pharmaceutical companies and the medical "industry".  If we could all self-medicate, many of them would have to work with actual sick people--yuck.  (Sarcasm)
Punishment? why? Why not prevention? Punishment is not the answer to prevention. Look to other countries that use prevention and set up treatment centers and education as a deterant. Better yet, watch Portugal.
What do you mean by meth? Meth in the u.k would mean methadone or are you taking about crystal Meth?
crystal meth
honestly...there is no solution or punishment that the legal system can dish out that will cause teens or even people here in america to stay away from drugs. They all say the same thing "it cant happen to me"... its all in the mind in my opinion...either your going to be a user and fall to peer pressure and the addiction or your not. fear of the courts is one of the last things in the addicts mind...until they get caught at least.
I tell my hubby all the time that his cigarette addiction is all in his head. I don't know whether it is true or not, but it is something I tell him because I hope that his brain can overpower his body somehow.
Of course he can, but it will be a 24/7/365 life endeavour, he will never be free, a constant struggle. Compared to I who is not addicted to anything (cept maybe internet), not smoking cigarettes requires zero effort, ever. It's an entirely different circumstance :)

have you ever smoked or been addicted? this question is huge...ive had soooo many ppl come up 2 me and tell me all the horrible things about smoking and drug habits only 2 find out they have never been addicted 2 anything.... only an addict/ex-addict/recovering addict, (however you perceve someone with a past addiction) truly knows the struggle...

exactly what I said :)
