We are a varied lot of people here with many economic and political beliefs. The one thing that unites most of us is are disregard for religion. Some will be more equipped to answer this question than maybe I am in even asking it. But here goes.
As Americans we are support eschew socialism and communism and place all our faith on THE MARKET to solve all societies problems and best allocate resources. The way I understand it there are a couple basic assumptions that makes THE MARKET the ultimate arbiter of societies wants and needs. One of those assumptions is that people will act in their own best interests. There is also an assumption of perfect and equal access to information. We all know or can know the same information to base our decisions upon and we will make those decisions upon that information and our best interests.
I think religion undermines both of those assumptions. They impose a standard of morality that perverts people's understanding of what their own best interests are. They will vote against tax cuts for themselves because some two faced politician promises to enforce their morality while stealing their money. They reject information such as science or basic economics because their religious leaders offer them a magical solution that contradicts science but asks nothing of them but to believe.
I don't know where I am going with this but perhaps some wiser people more informed with the economic theory of the free market can develop the idea.
