Do you think the Catholic Church will fall in Australia following recent events, or will they just shrug off the controvers?

I don't know how much most of you will know about the current happenings in Australia, but we are in the middle of a massive investigation into the Church's cover up of sexual abuse. Today the highest ranked catholic in the country, Cardinal George Pell, appeared in court and admitted that members of the clergy covered up the sexual abuse of children. This was part of, I believe, the Victorian parliamentary inquiry into child abuse in the church, but it comes just as the Royal Commission is about to really take off.

I hope that this will allow most of Australia to see how corrupt, archaic and inane the Catholic church is, as well as all religious institutions. I was wondering if you guys thought that this will have a negative effect upon the catholic church in the long run, and if these effects could ripple through to other states, such as the U.S. and the U.K.

Didn't make much of a difference in Ireland.

All that slimey talk of his makes me want to go take a shower.

Can you believe that he - Cardinal George Pell - head of the Roman Catholic Church in Australia - did not know what the word "facilitate" means.- How embarassing.

I love that he was described as having a 'sociopathic lack of empathy' toward the victims.

Its good watching him squirm.

I doubt that this will make the church fall but every push counts.
