Darwins Theory of Evolution Causes Horrific Evils!

Hello everyone

I havent been on here a while but I feel now is the time to unload. So I unfortunately ended up in an argument with my brother the other day about religion (bad move I know). All of my family are catholics apart from my brothers who have been brainwashed by my future sister in law and are now Pentecostal....for now anyway, they change a lot.

So my husband found the 'good news' magazine next to my brothers bed the other day with an article about Darwin and how his theory of evolution has caused cataclysmic devestation in the world, eg the nazis using this theory etc.

My husband felt sick reading it and I was absolutely devistated. To think my so called 'intelligent' brother who also studied philosophy, is reading this BS!!!

I have never felt so isolated from my family as I am now and my relationship with my brothers is now so uncomfortable, I do feel very judged and alone. I know there is no point trying to reason with them as I feel they are too far gone so to speak.

Has anyone else been through something similar? what were your experiences? any advice? did your story turn out good or not?

what about the Darwin theory? has anyone ever challenged you on this or you challenged them?

Any input back would be a great help and a great shoulder to cry on guys.

thanks very much in advance as I know you hear this kind of shit a lot.

Hi! I'm new to all this so please be patient with me! Thanks!

So my husband found the 'good news' magazine next to my brothers bed the other day with an article about Darwin and how his theory of evolution has caused cataclysmic devestation[sic] in the world, eg the nazis using this theory etc.

This can be a non issue, many people like to read about dissenting opinions even when they are obviously wrong just to know another's thoughts, or even to have a good laugh. I have a bible, dozens of religious pamphlets and at least one apocalyptic/conspiratorial book, i have read some, believed none. Of course i'm not your brother but this can be an explanation, specially since it appears no one has asked him if he believed what it says in the book and was only confronted about the religion that accompanied it.

I have never felt so isolated from my family as I am now and my relationship with my brothers is now so uncomfortable, I do feel very judged and alone. I know there is no point trying to reason with them as I feel they are too far gone so to speak.

Not really, i have not been ostracized for my non belief. My mother's only worry is  that i'm still the boy that she with the same manners and customs that she raised. Even if i think different, everything else is the same. You could try that approach as you are feeling they are abandoning you. You are defined as a person by who you are not by what you believe. You are still the little girl that $personal_story and that's never going to change.

I think this is the least of the issues and highly unimportant in contrast with the other affairs. But answering your question about Darwin's theory of evolution; it is completely unrelated to any conflict that has happened between nations. Even social movements, like social Darwinism and eugenics, that claimed to follow Darwin's ideas, ignored the important chunk of it, diversity and fitness to environment.

Back on topic, if you would like to increased your knowledge about what evolution is, i recommend "Why Evolution is True".

I hope i was of help.

"My husband felt sick reading it and I was absolutely devastated."

I feel the same way - disgust.

A response that immediately comes to mind is if someone were to take this issue of Good News and debunk every page , and publish it prominently enough that Good News would want to defend themselves publicly. Someone needs to really pick a public fight with those pieces of shit.

I'm ready for a fight.

Really? Maybe they need a lesson in history.

This is a 'standard issue' (and rather tiresome) argument for religious crackpots, especially creationists. It's a dismissible 'appeal to nature' fallacy falsely attributed to the science of evolutionary biology.

They conflate the natural selection aspect of biological evolution with social Darwinism, an abhorrent view that the healthy and powerful should rule while the sick and powerless should die. In other words, the crackpot claims that accepting the truth of a biological process also requires accepting it as an ethical guide for how human society should operate. This is, of course, rubbish.

As I was taking philosophy classes, it was often times suggested that we have 'a very broad reading list'. For me this included what could be called 'the fringe'. Sometimes this material could offer insights, debate points, areas worth researching, and gut wrenching humor.

Something to consider, that could be considered by some as a major part of human nature, that even the greatest of us can spend time in obsessions. Newton in alchemy, comes to mind, but we need to give him room since the study of 'chemistry' had not really matured yet.

Does your brother actually 'believe' or does he just 'read for entertainment for insight'?

Science is neither good nor evil. Something as simple as fire can be immensely helpful to advancing human welfare, yet it can also be weaponized and devastatingly harmful. Should we have applied science to better understand fire, or tried to cram the genie back in the bottle? Regardless of which path one chooses, it does not alter the properties of fire or its ability to help or harm.

Whether you believe in gods or not, the universe is what it is. If evolution is true, it's true be it by the hand of God almighty, or just natural occurrence. I'd say the best practice is to try to understand it as best we can in order to (hopefully) make informed decisions. Specifically with evolution, we were already fucking about with it waaaay before Darwin with selective breeding of animals and plants.

What I am getting at here is, even if Darwin's writings on natural selection led to evil, it's not a deep concern of mine. Knowledge can be used for good or bad, but it is not inherently either.

Did the Nazis use Darwin's works to justify heinous acts? Not really. I don't recall Darwin advocating a master race, or promoting eugenics. His work doesn't really reach that conclusion. If his name was invoked, it was politics, not science.

Does it really matter either way in present times? Perhaps as a point of history, it does, but Darwin needs to be kept in perspective. He, along with other (currently less famous) peers of his time, helped advance the theory of evolution to where it is now. Origin of Species, however, is not a gospel for evolutionary theory. It is not sacred and infallible. Science has moved on and we know more today than Darwin could have ever known in his day. When theists take a swipe at Darwin, they're chasing ghosts of the past. A fine pastime, I'm sure, but not all that concerning for those of us in the 21st century.

When we 'choose' we do not always know what the spin-offs will be. This seems to be the same for creativity and the pursuit of knowledge.

As I have matured, it has become a major source of concern that I apply what I know with significant 'mind-fullness'. Even offering a little knowledge to the wrong or the foolish, has a few times yielded poor of unexpected results. I fear that many of our fellow travelers are more driven by power and/or fun than good sense. 'Knowing enough to be dangerous', seems to be a standard result for many.

As a young man I must have exposed myself to low dose radiation, heavy metals, organics with nasty MSDS, etc, out of couriosity, and incomplete knowledge. So far I have not grown a second head, or been replaced by my evil twin.....

what about the Darwin theory? has anyone ever challenged you on this or you challenged them?

Hi Looch, there are so many ways to rebutt this line of thinking... The most prominent in my mind is this: "How does a theory causing horrific evil affect its truth?". The answer, of course, is that it doesn't.

Sorry to hear about your strained relationship with your brothers. I hope you all work out some kind of truce and manage to live with each other.

A 'theory' parallels 'thought. If one does not 'think', will a 'theory' ever be created or supposed?

Un-packing the 'horrific evils of Darwinism', one must return to what generated it, nature study, evidence, discovery of 'patterns', and thought. If we never study nature will we ever find 'patterns'? If we always 'assume' that we know everything already, will we ever need to think something new or at variance to our assumptions?

The 'evils of Theism' must be considered in this light, when it is at its worst.

Thank you so much to all of you that have responded. Your words gave me great comfort in many different ways. To mention a few points, my brother does not read a wide range of literature based on different opinions. Which I would encourage....but it's all bias religious bible study crap that actually contradicts science and is just plain false. Another book my husband had a sneak peek at was about how there is no science or proof behind the gay gene. Again....wrong. There is research going on studying this topic so to dismiss it simply by saying so is beyond me. Some of you are right though. I should not let some of these areas bother me so much. I think because it's so close to home I'm finding it difficult to accept my brothers think this way. Oh well.....thank you once again all very interesting and helpful responses from my fellow Atheists.

Darwinism, as it is generally (mis)understood by the fundamentalists, is old hat. What we have now is Modern Evolutionary Science. It is based on Darwin’s Theory but is much more advanced and refined.

It is as pointless as attacking Newton’s theory on the motion of heavenly bodies when we are already starting to see beyond Einstein’s theory of relativity.

We are way past “Darwinism”. Ask them to study modern evolutionary theory and then continue the conversation. Ask them what they think of DNA evidence that links all forms of life on Earth to each other ;-)
