New to the site, so sorry if this has been discussed before.

I am interested to see if we could get to the bottom of this hoary old chesnut....

The UK is a country with an official state religion, we have the Church of England, our head of state (The Queen, gawd bless er) is defender of the faith. And yet if any politian puts his/her head above the paprapet and proclaims some sort of religious belief he/she is laughed at or worse.

The USA has teneants within its consitiution that basically ensures that there will be no specific state religion. Yet unless you are a card carrying Christian your chance of getting elected to any office are almost nill.

Could it be that the population are naturally rebeling against the status quo. I.E. we do exactly what the establishment tells us not to? IF so perhaps US atheist should lobby for a state religion.
