Church Tax Exemption?

Why is it that the church is allowed to be tax exempt? Everyone else must pay their taxes, but not the church.

I know it is a separation of Church and State. The law should be repealed and the Church should pay taxes on their land!

Give me your thoughts...

I think they should have to pay taxes like anyone else. At the very least, they should pay property taxes. If they want to also, conduct charities, than I agree that tax free status should likely apply for those divisions. But churches main functions aren't charity. Thus, as a whole, I feel they should be liable to pay taxes, for their non-charitable functions.
