I know a couple of kids going through PSR (Parish School of Religion). I was not raised catholic so I'm not sure what kinds of things take place there.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what to say to these poor kids. It's obviously not a good thing for them because it has the words "school" and "religion" in the title -never mind it being catholic.

I'd love to make a difference in the lives of these two children. I'd love to give them the best tools for thinking for themselves as possible even at this early age.

And while I'm at it, I'm not sure a person who's still doing name calling a la middle school is ready for any kind of parenting role. Providing a good example and all. Or do you think kids should engage in name calling?

RE: "Ask archaeopteryx about my insufferability." - No, no, no, you don't want to get ME started --

I was told you were on another rampage, and thought I'd check it out for myself. Yup, you are, business as usual - good luck with that!

Just don't say anything you'll be sorry for when you sober up - G'Nite!

Catholic PSR is usually an after-school or weekend thing for public school kids. I don't think they'll have them vacuuming the nunnery or polishing the silver like the full timers get to do, LOL. To give them credit they did "break" a few bullies in my school by beating the crap out of them. One nun grabbed a kid by his ear. Everyone heard the cartilage in his ear "pop". He never looked the same, one ear kinda dropped. Naturally the chapters on evolution were cut out of our zoology texts and even the Table Of Contents had been  "blacked out" for those chapters. Every Friday we had confession. I started confessing that I made up sins for last Friday's confession. That got me a haircut in the deans office. Oh yeah..I was looking Good..I got me a Friar Special !!!!

It's the possibility of similar abuse that concerns me. I mean that and the fact that they are led to believe that they will go to hell if they don't follow the doctrine (among other lies) is psychological abuse. I also think keeping children from learning about evolution is a bit more than an educational set back. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm a student and I agree with this. This is assault and battery and abuse and the civil rights of adolescents are still ignored when people condone this.

I certainly wouldn't offer any advice without knowing exactly why you think the raising of these particular kids is any of your business.  I think your motivations are commendable; but if you want to make a real difference, start your own "Church Without Jesus," like in the John Huston movie, "Wise Blood" (1979).

I see that you have gone out of your way to offer advice after stating that you wouldn't with out that crucial piece of information. This movie that you mention must have left a deep impression on your life in order for you make that suggestion. Thank you!

If in the future you need more information to go by before you give advice then please feel free to ask. I would hate for you to be ignorant on these matters and rather than try to actually be helpful and refrain from advisory only to go on to suggest a shitty 1970s movie.

I liken indoctrination to a form of emotional/intellectual rape, personally.  I see only irresponsibility when one fails to let this perspective be known.  Perhaps that's why I get deleted a lot on FB lately.  I make it known that I feel this way.  I would no sooner view an act of indoctrination and keep quiet than witness an actual act of sexual rape and stay silent.  But that's just me.

But isn't one person's indoctrination another person's education? If you can't control yourself, yes, that would explain how you keep on losing FB friends. Of course, good friends are hard to lose, bad ones easy to "Block."

How is one person's indoctrination another's education?  That doesn't justify indoctrination.  Not that you were saying it is justification, but it is implied indirectly at the very least.

They're two words that can be used to describe the same activity, although they aren't synonyms. The difference is in the perspective of the person doing the describing.

Are they old enough to read? Give them some books
