Several airlines are now offering child-free flying or flying where children are barred totally or are well isolated from passengers who want that privilege.

Is this a good idea? I ask, because I have a similar idea.

On a recent flight across almost the entire breadth of the US (something like 1500 miles) I was on a plain with a person who obviously suffered from Tourette's syndrome. Every 10 or 15 minutes he would shout "Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike." This was very disruptive to me and anyone else like me who likes to sleep their way from point A to point B.

So, how about child-free and Tourette's free flights? And let's include any non-stop talkers with loud voices as well as those passengers who treat a long flight as party time or as an opportunity to share their appreciation of sports interspersed with loud guffaws, fist bumps, and high fives. And then there are those people who are wider than economy class seats were designed for.

Now, I have to admit that, as someone who shared in the raising of his child, crying babies don't bother me. I can sleep through it. Ditto for screaming of struggling 2 year olds. I'd just like to see if we could exclude all those other annoyances as well, while we're at it.

I like the idea that trains have of isolated compartments. Put that on a plane. Bullet resistant plastics make up the walls, and the cockpit is sealed like a vault. Then get rid of the TSA all together, because they're basically bouncers and metal detectors sitting at a bus stop.

Yeah I can't say that I totally agree with that. Sure its really annoying, but to tell children they are not allowed on a plane; is kind of age discrimination.

I do however think airline staff should have the freedom to tell other passengers to keep it down and tell them to tell their children to keep it down.
