Boy Scouts Ends Ban on Gay Members, But They're Still Bigots...

Today the 1,400 member leadership of Boy Scouts of America voted 61% in favor of lifting the ban on gay members, but left the ban on gay leaders in place. What a cowardly, half-measure on the part of Boy Scouts. If you're going to do it, have some guts and do it all the way.

The reaction has been swift: some churches are already cutting ties with the Boy Scouts just hours after the decision was announced. Where do you go when you're bigoted, but not quite bigoted enough? The answer in some cases: other churches.

But will there be enough "less bigoted" churches to go around? 70% of the more than 100,000 Scouting units in the U.S. are chartered by religious institutions, with the largest sponsors including the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Southern Baptist churches, all of whom supported the total ban.

It'll be interesting to see what these crackpots do now that Boy Scouts of America has gone from Anti-Gay to Anti-Gay Lite.

My take: I hope the churches yank every penny of funding and 70% of the gutless BSA has nowhere to go and shuts down. Let BSA have the stones to acknowledge total equality in every way-- in its membership and leadership-- or let their whole organization land in the garbage bin of history.
