Believe in God or your service to America is meaningless.

My name is [information removed]. One of the things I've found in my career is that Atheism is one of the things you don't talk about. The military is, as many have commented to me before, a Christian organization being ran by, you guessed it, Christians. It's discouraging to me as an Atheist when our commanders give us the motivational speeches about "Winning the war against Radical Islam". It's MADDENING! This isn't a war on Islam, it's a war on TERRORISM. (The upper-echelon frequently fails to see the difference.) I won't officially put my stance on the Crusade War in Iraq, but when we, as the war fighters, aren't even provided the basic rights that we're fighting for, it makes you wonder... Why are we fighting? Are my religious views a danger to the mission? If I don't believe in God, do I not perform as well in my job?

I've posted some links to articles and videos on the Anti-Atheist sentiment in the military. At the very least you should check out the Pat Tillman video. It's disgusting how disrespectful some people are, even to the families of our fallen soldiers, in the "name of God".

Let me know what you think, I'd be happy to discuss. :)

Wow Christopher this is now featured. I agree this is something that really needs to be addressed more. I am really glad you are apart of the community! You could be a potential launching pad for other military people to come out, and It is quite disheartening as a citizen to see this happening and to be brushed right under our feet like it's not happening. If there is anything I can do to help mobilize the site in any way I can feel free to message me with any ideas. I have yet to watch the vid's but I plan to and report back.

BTW have you seen this video?

I feel there is alot of issues that need to be addressed one of the main things is the program called STOP LOSS... It feels to me that we are fighting because of money. I would say that potentially some higher up's would think so that your religious views might be a potential conflict with what's going on. Which is pure madness! Right now I feel like I need to contact my senator... The problem is that im pretty sure he's a Christian...
this clip is now unavailable.
PS this story is now on digg. Everyone else please digg it!
:( i feel awful about this!!! What can I do to help out? This is very insulting!!!
It's no surprise the American military is Christian-driven - religious convictions are one of the few things irrational enough and imperative enough to drive someone to kill in the name of an idea.

Since you clearly recognize the leadership of the military as ideological, it should come as no surprise to you that you are, in fact, involved in a holy war. It is a war against Islam – the fanatics attacking America aren't doing it because they love terrorism, but because they love Allah.
The armed forces are unfortunately infused with the same superstitions as your average sports team. Favorite shirts, good luck charms, pre-game rituals and the like. That is really very dangerous for those who are set to perform duties which require the utmost care, logic and critical thinking. Instead you are subject to blind faith and meaningless prayer.
For what it's worth it, thank you for putting up with it and managing to remain safe through it all.

I saw this documentary on what I THOUGHT would be interviews with veterans of D-Day and specifically, the unimaginable slaughter of young soldiers during the Normandie Omaha Beach landings. What I got was a few veterans repeating over and over how there are no Atheists in foxholes. How their core belief is that they are alive and the missions worked eventually, because of faith and the fact that god was on their side.
All I kept thinking was: where does that leave the troops that never even made it off the boats or simply washed ashore?...how are their prayers any different from those of survivors?. What was the point of their existence and how does god decide who becomes a war hero and who makes the long journey only to be shot dead where they stood, without setting foot on that beach?
I can't hate on the guys telling the stories, but in all that time they have had to reflect, this was never an issue?

Athesits, from what I've read, are receiving real threats within their own stations. Is that the case? and how long has this been going on?
I noticed the time stamp on the Atheist sues military for "unconstitutional" discrimination. Its been a while. anyone know of a follow up?
As a retired soldier, I understand the concern about letting your chain of command know you are an atheist. I admit I didn't let it be known when I was on active duty. Unfortunately, this will not change until more of us speak out. It will take time, but I can sense that more and more people are saying enough is enough.
