The giant tortoises of the Galapagos Islands are the largest of their kind in the world--some measuring as much as five feet long and 1/4 of a ton--and have some of nature's most impressive lifespans. Scientists believe this tortoise, known (somewhat depressingly) as Lonesome George because he's believed to be the last of his species, has been around for roughly 100 years, but that's nothing compared to his most famous relative, Harriet, who died in 2006: She's said to have been born in 1830, five years before Charles Darwin showed up on San Cristobal.
