One gas station owner here in South Carolina has a digital readout on all of his pumps that says "One nation under god. If you don't like it, LEAVE!" Sadly, it isn't the first time we've heard this. Many Americans also want immigrants and gays to leave as well.
What is with my state? Just last month, we had a woman hang and burn a dog because it chewed her bible. It really pissed me off and I started a petition because I fear that she is going to receive undeserved lenience. I've heard people around here say things like "what if god really did tell her to do it?". I can't help but think she will be sentenced with the same delusion in mind. The ignorance here amazes me. Btw, if you haven't signed my petition, here is the link http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/woman-hangs-and-burns-dog/
Back to the subject. Christians really believe that they run this country. It is aparent that they want atheists out of it. How can we show them that this is not a Christian nation? We have quoted statements from our founding fathers, we have argued about separation of church and state, we have rejected creationism in our classrooms, and Obama has even stated on several occasions that this is not a Christian Nation. What else can we do to convince Christians that this is a country for everyone?
I was watching The Daily Show from last night and Jon had David Burton (wallbuilders) on. I realized that a thought that has been rattling around in the back of my mind for some time finally solidified. I've had several arguments about whether or not the founding fathers meant to have religion "have influence" over our government.
What I have come to realize is that I don't care. I don't care if all or none of the FF's where religious, I don't care if they intended to have religion have an extreme amount of influence, or no influence at all. I don't care if this country was "founded on xian values" or not. I simply don't care.
What I DO care about is basically two things.
This country is NOW based on liberty and freedom. Religion in general and xianity specifically, is decidedly against basic freedom. Therefore, religion should not have any influence over the politics of this country.
The second point is that, since all religions are childish, delusional superstitions, it should have no influence over civilized society.
People tell me that "this country was founded on xian principles." Yes, that is true. Luckily, we are maturing past that. We no longer hold slaves. We allow women to actually have a voice, both in politics and religion. We don't allow people to be burned at the stake on unsubstantiated, trumped-up charges. We no longer prosecute scientists for discovering truths that contradict what someone has interpreted out of the bible. We are abandoning all those barbaric, prejudicial "principles" that keep trying to drag us back into the dark ages.
So, basically, how intertwined religion is in our country's history is completely irrelevant. The important thing is what is happening in the here and now and what will happen in the future. We need to continue working to eliminate the scourge of religion.
"This country was founded on Christian principles." Reply, "And we've survived in spite of it, eliminating slavery, establishing equality for gender & race, developing antibiotics rather than relying on prayer - and all that progress has resisted the pull of Religion to drag us back to the dark ages."
Don't forget anesthesia, especially for childbirth. Something the religiotards resisted.
How can we show them that this is not a Christian nation?
According to wikipedia, the second highest religious demographic in America is non-religious with 15% of the population falling under it & 5.2% either were confused or refused to answer. This is significantly larger than the 3.9% of all other non-christian religions put together. So how is it that other smaller groups have strong lobbies but the non-religious folks don't?
It's because most Atheists don't rally. Too many people are willing to "live and let live," even when those other people are trying to take away their rights and liberties. Even when the xians are NOT willing to live and let live.
Religions can get their people to rally. They can get people to donate to a central "authority" in order for them to lobby for their cause. Because atheists don't have that authority to drive it to contribute, we tend to not contribute to a group that will lobby for our interests. Personally, my primary contribution goes to the ACLU, since they are the best group that I know of for keeping the religious at bay. If anyone knows of a better organization for doing that, please post so we can all know.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation is also a good one to donate to.
Not sure what you mean by atheists.
It would be nice if it was only that there are too many willing to live and let live. Not that I am implying you made that claim.
