Atheists Should Leave America?
One gas station owner here in South Carolina has a digital readout on all of his pumps that says "One nation under god. If you don't like it, LEAVE!" Sadly, it isn't the first time we've heard this. Many Americans also want immigrants and gays to leave as well.

What is with my state? Just last month, we had a woman hang and burn a dog because it chewed her bible. It really pissed me off and I started a petition because I fear that she is going to receive undeserved lenience. I've heard people around here say things like "what if god really did tell her to do it?". I can't help but think she will be sentenced with the same delusion in mind. The ignorance here amazes me. Back to the subject. Christians really believe that they run this country. It is aparent that they want atheists out of it. How can we show them that this is not a Christian nation? We have quoted statements from our founding fathers, we have argued about separation of church and state, we have rejected creationism in our classrooms, and Obama has even stated on several occasions that this is not a Christian Nation. What else can we do to convince Christians that this is a country for everyone?

Wow, Dale. You are setting yourself up for a barrage of "they were so xians!" LOL But I completely agree. As long as xians don't shove their delusional superstition down my throat, I'm happy to have them as my neighbor. Just keep your sanctimonious rhetoric to yourselves. :)

Xianity is the foundation for many bigotries. That's one of the worst things (not THE worst, but certainly up there in the top 5) about religion. It allows people to be bigoted and prejudice without feeling the guilt. And it allows like-minded bigots to reinforce each others "beliefs" that support such a backward, heartless, pathetic self-righteous world-view.

The problem with religious people like that is that not only are they religious, they are racist and homophobic as well. Now I'm guessing a majority of the people there think that way because they are christian but also keep in mind that it is a southern state. Southern states have always been racist and homophobic with or without religion being involved. Unfortunately nothing will change down there unless the atheist community in the south rises up against that blatant hate and bigotry.

The only thing more hated than other races and homosexuals and even Jews is atheists!
Indeed, hatred of atheists might well cause the Klan, the black churches, the Jews, and the gays to toss in together against a common enemy. It's happened before - the Dutch Reformed Church (Calvinist) joined "in solidarity" (!) w/Amsterdam's Jewish community to denounce Spinoza (a lapsed, secular Jew), who stood accused of atheism.

During the Viet Nam Era - after the anti-war protests began - there were hundreds of bumper stickers that read, "America - Love It Or Leave It!"
I have a more appropriate one - "America - Love It Or Change It!"

Cute how this message appears after you've already swiped your card and filled your tank (assuming it's not a pre-pay station). I guess if they really wanted to take a stand for JEEZUS they could of displayed that message prominently before you were obligated to pay for the gas you just pumped.
And to the dog lady: What if god wanted your dog to chew your bible. If a chewed up bible would be so offensive to him, why would he allow it to happen? (Although judging by the elaborate instructions on the execution, dissection, and immolation of animals found in the old testament, maybe he did want you to hang and burn your dog. Good on you for being such a faithful xtian. <--*sarcasm*)

** The "God" referred to is not the xian "God"
Ironically, federal courts, including the Supremes, do not accept the claim that the use of the word 'God' constitutes a violation of the 1st amendment. How is this possible?
Quite simple. The "God" added to the pledge during the Red Scare of the 1950's and the notorious phrase, "In God we trust" which appeared on coins during the civil war -- refer not to any sectarian divinity.
That is, this "God" is not the xian divinity, it (not he) is not Allah or Yahweh or Ganesha .... Broadly speaking this "God" is Providence, the "god of western religious tradition". The courts hold that this entity is a one-size-fits-all being -- a being dear to the 18th century deists, like Jefferson, Franklin, Paine.
Of course, the deity of the courts leaves atheists out in the cold. But, at the same time xians are sorely mistaken that "God" refers to the moral monster depicted in their so-called sacred texts.
So -- the god of the state (the non-entity endorsed by the courts) is not the xian god. It ("He") is a slimy little concept worthy of its cowardly creators who need CYA from laws against atheism.
