I had the thought a few days ago in church (I was dragged there, no choice) that the whole idea of faith is just psychological. People think they feel better after praying because they've been raised to think that it helps, and because in their mind they believe it will help them. And because of the comfort it gives them, people get very connected to and defensive of their religions.
