I'd wait until college and even there I'd be careful who I tell cuz in college there's some religious nuts too, so to speak. I've run into that a lot in Utah but it's a republican state. They tend to hang out in coffee shops too. Haha A nice exit might be "I'm spiritual but not religious" if they start foaming at the mouth. ;) Too bad you're not Native American or Latina cuz you could tell them you're part of the Mexica Movement but actually, you can say you're an ally. Basically it's activists returning to their pagan roots. It's kinda interesting too! Welcome to the group! I hope you learn much and enjoy your time spent here.

Yeah, I live in Texas and (unfortunately) will be staying in Texas for college, so I definitely understand that. The way I figure it, I will tell anyone who asks me the truth because I refuse to deny my beliefs, but I won't go out of my way to announce it. That's how I have been with my friends up to this point, and for the most part, it has worked pretty well. Come to think of it, I think my family members are the only ones who don't really know. 

As for being Latina, I actually am :) I'm Puerto Rican, actually.

Oh cool my family on my mom's side is Mexican and on my father's side they're American cowboys. I speak a bit of Spanish as a result. I'm not really into the Mexica Movement actually especially because they basically want their land back. That won't go over well with most people. Sorry for the bad advice. I'd definitely stick with your method. I agree with Ed that you can suggest the Unitarians. I've heard good things about them too.

Kelsey,

One way to "buy some time" is to tell your parents the next time they want you to go to church w/ them that you are exploring your faith and want to attend a different church. Now a perfect church to explore those options would be the Unitarian Church. They hold no expectations and are quite comfortable with your believing what you want. Not being a follower of Xtianity or even being agnostic is not a "deal breaker" for them. I dated an American Unitarian years ago and was amazed at how liberal her religious thoughts were. In my mind their universal attitude of acceptance almost makes them irrelevant as a theistic institution. They are certainly the lesser of organized church evils.

Just a thought.....

Hey that's pretty cool. I'll check them out. I know the message was for Kelsey but now I'm intrigued. I've heard them mentioned before and Ray Kurzweil, a scientist I'm a fan of, is a Unitarian. Seems worth looking into for certain.
