Permalink Reply by Albert Bakker on January 1, 2011 at 11:08am I listen to FFRF podcasts and once in a while they report about some big hassle about nativity scenes being displayed on public property. Now I am not an American, so this is no business of mine either way, but this whole thing just seems so puzzling to me.
The only way that I can come up with an explanation lies in the strange disconnect between (public display of) religiosity on the one hand and the way the notion of the separation of church and state in American culture is so much more alive, and maybe for good reasons, than any other country I can come up with.
I am sympathetic but I just don't get the urgency with pushy nativity scenes and fail to see a positive balance between act and consequences. But again I have no right to judge and are in no immediate danger of being bored to death by them.
Permalink Reply by TDM on January 1, 2011 at 11:40am the problem with "leaving it alone" is at some point it will become a problem for a person trying to be straight with theirself. it is a civil rights issue and on that point alone it has to be addressed. oppression and the hand of religion is still oppression. i like to take the sting out of the situation with comedy if possibile, kinda like the santa thing at the manger, and yea they should of used the easter bunny as well, as SR pointed out below..

Why? Is it in danger of collapse or something? You need some strong arguments for your actions.
Permalink Reply by Velogiraptor on January 1, 2011 at 5:50pm Establishment clause of the constitution (First Amendment) of the United States creates a wall of separation of church and state.
Simply put, it's illegal, except there are so many Christians in the country that they feel they can disregard that part of our Bill of Rights.
