Event Description

The far-right extremists on the Texas State Board of Education recently proposed sweeping changes to the social studies curriculum. These changes include removing Thomas Jefferson from a world history standard about important Enlightenment thinkers, exaggerating (or outright lying about) the influence of religion on the Founders, downplaying the importance of the civil rights movement, and exaggerating the importance of conservatives such as Phyllis Schlafly, Newt Gingrich, and even Rush Limbaugh.

Join the Atheist Community of Austin for a rally at the State Capitol on Sunday, May 16th, 2010.Bring your friends, neighbors, family members - anyone who cares what kind of education kids in Texas receive. We need 1000 people there to send a message to the SBOE and the Texas Lege - that religious and political ideologies aren't an appropriate foundation for a 21st century education.

Bring a lunch, sunscreen, and a sign - Separation of Church & State signs are particularly appropriate. You'll join members of other atheist, freethinker, and concerned citizen groups from across the state. More details to follow as we get closer to the rally.

Yikes, time flies; only two days left until the rally. I still have not dug up that petition!

Shine: I had that idea as well before I got sidetracked into bombing the email address. Any luck with the petition?

Good idea, GT. I think that I remember hearing about a petition circulating somewhere for this; I'll have to see if I can dig up the link.

The State Board of Education (SBOE) has an elected 15 member board. Here is a picture of Officers, Committees, and Members from the webpage

It seems that all emails to these people go to one address -

Just a thought, we could have an email writing campaign to SBOE supporting whatever your proposals are?

The rally is legit, I just don't know what other organizations are involved.

Here is a link to the ACA's Facebook page. I don't think that they have posted an event for the rally, though. I found an American Atheist and a Secular Center page, but as I'm not familiar with either organization I don't know if those are official or fan pages. (I'm just hesitant to link the wrong organization.)
