Ancestor's Trail 2011

Event Details

Event Description

The project, named after Richard Dawkins’ book the 'Ancestor's Tale', combines biodiversity, atheism, long distance walking and evolution. It represents, as far as we know, the only biological pilgrimage. This is the second Ancestor's Trail but, right from the start, it has been supported by the BHA.

The event is located in Somerset, UK and we are aware that a lot of 'Think Atheist' supporters will live too far away to attend. However, the idea has already spawned a similar Trail in Canada near Toronto and I am currently researching a second UK Trail in North Yorkshire. Consequently, if you would like to help us widen our net please invest in our 'Crowdfunder pitch'. This will allow you to secure your ticket OR invest as a non attender. If you choose this latter option, we will send you through a video of the day's events including speakers, music and rendezvous guests. Please visit: http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/investment/ancestor-s-trail-72.

So how does the event work? Simultaneously a number of disparately located walking groups will begin trails that eventually coalesce, depicting the story of evolution in reverse. The number of walkers following the trail will gradually swell as tributary groups, representing the various branches the tree of life, merge with the main body of walkers. Eventually, the ever-increasing band of hikers will arrive together at a fossil strewn beach, where we will celebrate life's 3.7 billionth birthday with a small science festival.

We'd love to welcome members of Think Atheist to this year's event in Somerset on 29th/30th of May. Many other atheist / humanist groups came last year from as far as London, Wales and across the South West region, and for 2011 we have chosen a Bank Holiday weekend to make the journey more worthwhile. To add to this we can also offer camping and accommodation in a holiday park right beside the sea.

Although we start with a walk, we end with a party including acts such as the BHA choir, Jonny Berliner (of Green Man festival fame), an atheist / science speaker and hopefully more.
