Unseen replied to Unseen's discussion 'Why isn't a 14 year old girl old enough to consent to sex?'
"I'm asking why not be consistent and tie them together with a consistent notion of whether a 14 year old is competent to make such decisions. If she is competent to assign herself surgery well then isn't she also competent to take on a sex…"

Unseen replied to Unseen's discussion 'Why isn't a 14 year old girl old enough to consent to sex?'
"So, if we figure she's competent enough to decide to have an abortion for fear of her parents' reaction, isn't she then ipso facto competent enough under the law to be thought of as capable of giving consent to sex to anyone whatever…"

Strega replied to Unseen's discussion 'Why isn't a 14 year old girl old enough to consent to sex?'
"Both, probably.  The abortion is a clear-up of a mistake already made, and an avoidance of bringing another human being in to the world that the biological mother would be too young to care for properly.  A random 14 year old may well be…"

Unseen replied to Unseen's discussion 'Why isn't a 14 year old girl old enough to consent to sex?'
"Sometimes parents won't want their 14 year old to be having sex. Is this no longer a parent's business.  I'm sorry abuse occurs, but are we now assuming that that's the case to such an extent that we no longer want more…"

Welcome to TA

Our Radio Show

This week on the Think Atheist Radio Show we have our interview with Dr. Sebastian Seung! Dr. Seung is a professor of computational neuroscience at MIT. A leading researcher in the emerging field of connectomics– the field of study that is attempting to map the connections in our brains– he has made important advances in artificial intelligence, neuroscience, neuroeconomics, and statistical physics. His recently published book, Connectome, does just what the subtitle says, explains how the brain's wiring makes us who we are. With implications for personality, identity, intelligence, memory, and even disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, this is a wide-ranging and fascinating book on a subject that would be right at home in a sci-fi movie but is in fact real! Don't miss this discussion!

And don't miss our recent interview with Dr. Jessica Pierce! Working in bioethics, Dr. Pierce is the co-author of Wild Justice: The Moral Lives of Animals. What does it say about human morality and what does it mean for the study of morality that many animals demonstrate behaviors that can only be described with words like "justice", "fairness", and "altruism"?
